Congratulations to those swimmers who competed in their first meet this weekend. Now attendance was a bit low (1/2 of our swimmers), but I understand that the majority of people were fighting off illness. But we are definitely going to need better attendance in the future.
As for the swimmers: Great job! There are some things we need to focus on, get in better shape, and fine tune our skills; but on the whole we competed well, looked strong and efficient. We competed well and swam smart. I know some people were extremely nervous before they swam, and I hope now they can see that there is really little to be afraid of. I do not focus on winning as much as self improvement. If as swimmers we are always looking to improve our strokes, times, and efficiency; then the places we finish will take care of themselves.

Welcom to Week 5
Thanks to everyone who attended the kick-off party, last Thrusday. I hope everyone had a great time. I enjoyed seeing everyone having so much fun with your fellow team mates. When you were stomping the floor it sounded like we were having a earthquake. We missed those of you who could not make it. Kim Marra sent some highlights about the meeting we had with the parent's in her weekly email.

This week in practice we are working on getting ready for our first swim meet. At Perry you will be working on starts and reviewing how the meet will be run with coach Matt. If you have any questions about getting prepared for the swim meet, please let one of the coaches know or you could speak with a vetran parent.

Our first meet is this Saturday in Copley. The directions are located on the website. The warm-ups have been changed from 1:30pm to 1:15pm. Please arrive before 1:15pm so you are ready to begin warm-ups right at 1:15. The first couple of meets you may not be swimming your favorite or best strokes. The coaches need to figure out what events each of the swimmers is best at.

Everyone has been doing such a good job. I am trying to get to know everyone. If I don't see you at practice, I will try and say hello to you at the meets. Thanks for being so welcoming to me during my first season with the team.

Keep up the great work.

Tuesday October 13th
This week we will be fine tuning our Freestyle and Backstroke. We will also be focusing on Starts and Turns. We will be introducing Butterfly and Breaststroke as well.
Reminder that the Kick Off Party will be this thursday Oct 15th, there will be no practice that day at Perry.
As the first swim meet draws near, please remember a few things:
1- Focus and concentrate on all that we have learned to this point
2- Listen and ask questions when learning new things
3- Eat right and get some good sleep
4- Please remain focused and remember the time to play will be upon us soon, now is the time to learn and work hard.

Fair well: To the Boos family who will be leaving for Alabama soon, if you see Carolyn or Rebekah around, wish them the best. They were very hard workers and did a lot for the Otters. Thank you and good luck.

Welcome to Week 3:
Now that our freestyle and backstroke are looking much better, we will be moving on to the more difficult strokes: Breaststroke and Butterfly, as well as working on our flip turns and starts. The swim meets are right around the corner, so preparation is a necessity. Please attend as many practices as you possibly can, this will insure that you are prepared for the meets coming up.

Reminder: make sure to check the website often for updates, surprise scheduling changes, and general information. Also coaches Matt and Jennifer can be reached at the YMCA pool office, during office hours Tues from 5-6pm.

Great Job with the candy bar sales and participation last Saturday at Walmart and Tractor Supply. Keep selling those wonderful candy bars.

Keep up the good work, keep practicing hard, keep checking the website, keep listening intently and stay focused on improving our strokes, conditioning and overall positive attitude towards the wonderful sport of swimming.

VERY IMPORTANT: Swimmer Etiquette during practice:
Always swim down the right side of the lane, Counter Clock wise swimming is needed in order to keep practice running smoothly.
When someone touches your foot, do not fight them or freak out and go much faster. Instead move over to the right side as the swimmer behind you passes. You don't have to stop. It should not be an insult if someone passes you, this happens a lot at every swim practice. You will pass people and people will pass you. Be polite and curious.
Do not dive into the YMCA pool EVER!!
Do not pull on lane lines during backstroke.
Do not hang or sit on lane lines.
Do not walk or push off the bottom.
Do not hit, kick, knee, elbow, dunk or splash anyone!
Once on the wall in between swims, PLEASE PLEASE don't play underwater or off the wall. This is distracting to those around you and when the coach constantly has to get one persons attention, it takes away from learning and the limited time we have in the pool.
Most importantly HAVE FUN, it is fun getting better at a sport, staying physically fit, setting and reaching goals.

Becky Repasky - Assistant Coach

I am excited to be a part of the Geauga Otters Swim Team. Swimming has always been a passion as I have competed in age group, high school and college teams. After graduating form Bethany College (WV), I coached for 5 years at Baldwin- Wallace College and taught Physical Education Courses. Currently I still race competetively in 1/2 marathons and triathlons. I look forward to working with everyone this season!

Matthew Wilmot, Assistant Coach

This is Matthew's third year working with the Geauga Otters.  He was a swimmer on the team from its founding year till he graduated from Cornerstone Christian Academy in 2009.  Since graduating high school Matthew has been attending Kent State University's Geauga campus and has just started the nursing program there.  He hopes to go into pediatric nursing and enjoys spending time with kids.  This is good because Matthew and his wife Tiffany will become parents this December 2011.

Many of you parents have digital cameras these days. If you have some photos that you would like to have on the site, please e-mail them to me.
